Jokowi hails PDIP as country’s largest political party on 49th anniversary

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo or Jokowi virtually attended the 49e celebration of the anniversary of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) on Monday January 10, 2022. In his opening speech, the President hailed the PDIP as the largest political party in the country.

“Thank goodness, when he reached the age of 49, the Indonesian Democratic Wrestling Party successfully became the largest political party in Indonesia. Merdeka! [freedom]”said Jokowi.

Jokowi also said that the PDIP, as a political party, has always stood up for the nation’s poor as well as its sovereignty and interests. The president also congratulated the party for its continued involvement in the formulation of national policies.

“On this occasion, on behalf of the society, the people and the country, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the PDIP for its support in preparing policies and facing the difficult times caused by COVID-19,” said Jokowi.

According to Jokowi, Indonesia has successfully overcome the health challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He said this was evident as confirmed cases fell 99% from the numbers at the peak of the pandemic in July 2021, which reached 56,000 per day.

He further explained that vaccinations in the country had progressed rapidly, placing Indonesia as the fifth country on the world list with the highest vaccination rates. To date, some 288 million doses of vaccine have been administered to the public.

“However, we must keep our eyes open for the possibilities of new pandemic risks due to the emergence of the Omicron variant just like Ibu Mega [Megawati Soekarnoputri] noted.”

At the end of his speech, Jokowi, who was twice nominated by the PDIP to run for president in 2014 and 2019, wished the party a happy birthday.

“Finally, I wish the PDIP a happy 49e birthday. May you become stronger and more glorious, ”Jokowi said.
